The upstairs radiators have been on for a couple of weeks now (so much easier to get up in a warm room!) - I think they came on the first time 16/10/11. Finally succumbed to the inevitable and had the downstairs heating on yesterday (29/10/11).

I'm in York (54.0N, 1.0W), about 15m above sea level, and heat my detached (and mostly unimproved) house with a *ahem* non-condensing gas boiler.

As an example: this morning I woke up to beautiful blue sky and the most lovely white 'sea' - I just love to look out over the sea and observe the little hillocks sticking out through the thick, heavy, nasty, cloggy, 10 deg colder fog/mist which, today, didn't clear at all!!!! and, of course, gloat about it to whoever will listen!!!. Meanwhile, the heating was off and the solar gain was on!!

We deliberately decided to buy at an altitude to improve our weather but we really struck lucky with this house because whilst the fog has lapped at the bottom of our garden on numerous occasions it has only once blocked the sun from our house.

One day I am certain I will do some Trombe Wall related stuff.

Our climate is NOT suited to wood burners/thermal stores.
It would have perished one on Friday past so I fired the log boiler up on Saturday, but over the weekend the heat was hardly needed as our weather suddenly turned positely balmy, I then had a tank of unneeded hot water, which was simply contributing to Global Warming.
    I feel so bad.

UK electricity prices are low because, in part, weather is predicted to stay above mean (2C to 5C) in London:

Our heating still not on as of last night.

The Peak Load price of £49/MWh seems very reasonable to me too.

Heating not on here either as it has just dropped a degree to 17C outside, good wind this evening though.
In a way I want to turn my heating on as I have fitted a new controller and want to know if it works, also has room to fit some more CT clamps. I can wait though

15C outside tonight. Spookily warm for November. My UFH has hardly been on since the 18th of October when I first reported it starting up.

Gee, and folks looked askance at me when I stated that all the predictions regarding another severe winter, starting in late October/early November were merely a foolproof sales pitch to flog stuff.
I may even have been right?

Sunny here, 16C outside and no wind now, better do the washing at get it on the line. Weather is fickle, but 80% of the time it will be within 80% of what happened yesterday (allegedly). So yesterday maximum was 18C, today's maximum should be somewhere between 14.4C and 19.6C. Let us see what my thermometer peaks at later.

SteamyTea - although I said our heating went on on the 21st October, can I say that that the C/H has hardly come on at all since then! The boiler is firing up primarily for DHW. The lounge temperature has not dropped below 18.5C overnight so far this autumn. It is hard to estimate properly because of the design of the hopper (max. capacity 3 tons) but I think we have about a ton of wood pellets left. If this lasts until the beginning of January then it will mean that we will have had only one delivery of pellets in 12 months (we had a top up of 2 tons in January). Looks like all the additional insulation is paying off.

    Always does if fitted right.

It is an interesting point you raise about the 'cold snap' and now unseasonally warm. There has been a couple of times that I could easily have turned the fan heater on (but can't find it at moment) while I have been working at home. Part of the reason I have been doing detailed monitoring my house for the last year is to gauge the cheapest form of heating for it (knowing that I am limited to bottled gas, oil, electric or bottled gas CHP, which I really fancy as it is a 'boys toy').

Given the weather forecasts (~10C every night) I've capitulated and put the heating on this evening, at least to try to work some of the air out of it from the last few rad moves, etc.

13.6 outside and no sun. Even when we did (yesterday) have a full day's sun I can't turn the heating off as the house reacts so slowly (especially the bit where my son spends most of his time). Still with HW mixed down to 55 deg being pumped by a Grunfoss using 5 watts, it's not so bad.

'1st day on' is clearly a rather limited measure given the rather random temps we get in the shoulder season. It might be on once for 2hrs then not on again for a couple of weeks. Is that 'started' or not? But I can't actually think of a better measure unless we can usefully get kWh/day (hard for the wood-people).

    altitude =160m;

regarding ST's comment about expecting a negative correlation between altitude and date, here's something to ponder:

It's often colder at the bottom of the hill (down in the frost pocket) and I'd presumed that this was because the cold air sinks. Whilst it would be subject to adiabatic warming as it sinks (of the order 1K/100m), it can still be 2 or 3K colder 130m below us (as observed by the thermometer in our van), so the air would've had to start off 4K lower at the top of the hill - maybe the cold air is being funneled down a valley from some higher altitude (we're surrounded by hills up to 400m).

The rate of warming is dependent upon saturation, so it might be interesting to ascertain whether there's an east-west bias (i.e. colder in the drier east, but lower lapse rate with height), although the required data aren't available...

and Happy New Year - J

To make you all feel better (except Paul who's over there), this just came from my brother in Montreal...

"Last night we had 90kph winds and higher gusts and freezing rain. Barbara was so nervous she packed a bag just in case. The noise around the house was awful as ice was flying everywhere. Today it is sunny and very cold while just west of here it is minus 50 C. Have to somehow dig out the car, right now it is a block of ice where the wind packed the freezing rain. If I can get into it I will put a small heater in there to melt it from the inside out."

I once made the mistake of taking an outdoor shortcut on foot in Montreal when it was minus-a-lot and blowing a hooley. I wore contact lenses at the time and the damn things froze in a few seconds, sticking to my eyelids and leaving me unable to see. I have no idea how they cope with those bitterly cold ice storms.
