Fundamentals: Criteria for Black Water Digester- must buy within one month

    My friend again. He has no water treatment and therefore will be buying a black water treatment plant in the UK for use in Italy (let's not go there). Water course within 50m. House will usually be occupied by 2 holiday makers (no kids) but in time will have a second bedroom and be retirement home for owners.

    So far these 2 being considered:

    But I am concerned over the ecodigester as very little detail given on site as to maintenance or power consumption. Could anyone actually recommend a digester or at least give some criteria on how to choose one. Do you get what you pay for - as clean enough is clean enough isn't it? Does it have to be powered in some way? Can these things be left 'off' for long periods when not in use ie no holiday makers? Many thanks.

    EDIT - just found electrical usage of ecodigester - 234W - what's Eco about that? Marsh Unigem starts at 80W.

    EDIT 2 - seems like http://www.bio-pure.com/online_shop_16.html 1-4 person tank, with 60W consumption and just one replaceable part (the compressor) and with longer emptying time might be best - any comment?

    Difficult to choose, even for people like most on this site, prepared to try and understand the technical issues.

    I have also been looking at different systems - the one that appealed to me was the Biorock because the air flow is natural convection, ie. no blower or compressor.
    Against that is the lower guaranteed life of 10years vs longer periods for some of the vendors you've highlighted, and the fact that a pump could well be required (not a problem if you're on a slope).
    I believe that the filtration media in this unit could be cheaply replaced - but would need to check on that.

    Thanks domhough - that appears to be exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to find, especially the ability to deal with towels, long vacancies and short start up time which hadn't occurred to me and might be disadvantages of the others I have looked at so the critical issue Price!!!! Did you get a price on the bio-rock with settlement tank, we only need the small one? The bio-pure was 2025 plus VAT which is a little more than the ecodigester.

    OK all sorted:

    Can't have ecodigester as no EU cert = no Italy (but maybe in 6-9 months)
    Can't have Marsh Uni Gem (TriCell in NI) because no sludge return = no intermittent use.

    Can have bio-rock - no power consumption, £2252 (+ VAT) plus settlement tank (empty every 3-5 yrs)
    Can have Bio-pure £2420 (+VAT) and no extra tank but 6-12 month emptying cycle and uses 60W.

    Issue over main tank warranty is that those made in GRP are not 100% recyclable and can therefore only be made in the UK (as we opted out of this bit of legislation) - still polypropylene, or whatever it is the others use, should still last a v long time if properly sited.
