Thought I would start a thread for interesting Radio and Internet TV programs to do with things we all like such as building, environment and general science things (well I like them).

Thought I would kick it off with this excellent Prof Ian Stewart one about Scotland's Water. First third is pretty depressing but after that it is very interesting about the hydro-electric generation.

Meant to put the first one up but never got around to it.
Pretty basic stuff, but interesting all the same and a good reminder about out atmosphere.

And a bit about noisy wind turbines and fish.

"Challenge Tommy Walsh" on Quest is always fun to watch. Probably more useful to non-builders and learners...though I can't get his favourite tipple out of my head: a pint of Baileys, if memory serves.

And, of course, Sarah Beeny's "Help! My House Is Falling Down!" on More4...unofficially known as "Duh! I Was Too Effing Stupid To Get A Survey!".

...that should keep you busy for a few hours, though I imagine you'll have to bite your tongue when some of the real stupidity comes into play.

ST - the first link in your Jan 20th post is no longer available. And where in the second link is the prog about wind turbines and fish?

Jim, that Adam Dadeby house - £35,000 for windows alone? regardless of the reasoning. And hardly representative of a "retrofit". £500,000 total cost places the project in the realm of wishful thinking for the majority of people and no guide whatsoever for anyone looking at this as an indication of how much their own (true) retrofit would cost.

I was also a bit concerned that it showed the guy vacuuming the old CWI out without any explanation as to why that was being done, at least in terms of what he was intending to do to replace what most people out there would consider a "benefit". Not everyone would appreciate that building up the walls and extending the building's footprint would require a new CWI installation (or not, given some of the opinions on the GBF). The GBF isn't accessed by the "general public" who, if they did access it, would learn what they should be putting in place instead, so such a piece in a local-interest television prog, watched by many thousands, could be considered, at best, misleading. I wonder how many people are now thinking: "Nah, no point paying out for cavity wall insulation because if that guy was taking his out..."

I guess it's not Adam's fault but that of the director, who'd probably cut out the informative bits. Another media victim. I was just left wondering why they'd bothered if they weren't going to do the job properly - the television people, not Adam.

Yes they do drop of the list, rights issues, bandwidth, storage and all that, why you have to get to listen to Ed Reardon pretty quick.

Start off discussing waves ( the wet type) as a process that transports energy , then moves on to more.
Well worth a look , though i did find the presenter very slightly annoying (probably quite unfairly)
"time is an element of work" i'll have to think about that a bit , currently its making my head hurt.

Well know phenomena, there is a book about it called 'Freakonomics'
And Philip Stott said who was the first man to mention it on Costing the Earth or Questions Question, cant remember which now.
There must be some research into this area because I have had the same income for about 6 years now, halved my household bills, got a better car and I still have none left at end of year. Strange that.
