I'd like to put the full 270mm insulation into my cottage loft. But I'd also like to floor a bit of it, at least between the hatch and the water tank area, and for a *little* bit of storage, let's say 10% of the space in total.

The joists are 6". Will it be noticeably detrimental to just use that depth, with chipboard on top? I know they sell hard polystyrene for this purpose in B&Q and places but it's horrifically expensive, so a cheaper technique would be welcome.

Why go to B & Q, or even Wickes and similar, for your solid insulation? I have found the proper insulation stockists to be much cheaper.
Of course for rolls of insulation you can't beat the DIY sheds when they are having promotions on behalf of the power companies ( often notified on GBF).

on top of the 6" joists fix little blocks of wood say 2x2 125mm high at two foot centres and fit 2x2 bearers then fill to within 50mm of the top with insulation, then floor leaving 50mm ventilation gap

Thanks tony. I'll do that for the storage "deck" then. But it would be too high for the walkway, guess I'll just use a bit of polystyrene for that.

I never considered a ventilation gap...
