    Dear Those Who Know, We are nearing completion of our strawbale/roundwoood timber studio - Our bathroom has a generously sized double window - we have used lime plaster, have an earthen floor and timber with sheepswool insulation in ceiling above bathrrom. We have one small slipper bath, no toilet and a basin. We don't want retrofit an extractor fan through a plastered strawbale wall in having deliberately chosen materials that will absorb and release vapour. Could you please advise whether there's a way around this building regs. requirement?

    Does your generously sized double window have an opening light? If so surely this will suffice for ventilation, if there is no opening light can one be fitted - even if it is never opened. I might be out of touch but opening windows were always deemed adequate ventilation.

    the only way round building regs is to fit a whole house ventilation system.

    Fit a fan inside and a grille outside with no hole joining them :thumbup:

    The current part F requires 'extract ventilation'. Windows don't qualify because the wind can blow in rather than out. You can use a passive stack instead of mechanical ventilation and obviously a mechanical vent can go through the ceiling/roof or window rather than the wall. But that's about it as far as I know.

    but that would not get rid of the fumes, smells, and other nasties (excluding moisture) !!:cry:

    Hi Carol, we are just installing 5 of these right now in our detached new build oak frame with fully open inside warm roof:

    Non powered, zero maintenance, very simple and very clever, it has been a learning curve, and not totally straightforward compared to a house build with a 'loft' but it happily meets new build regulations and best of all, no noisy fans coming on every time you go into a bathroom! or unsightly plastic vents on exterior of house walls. I am thinking from your style of build that you are in the same mindset as me.. I HATE plastic and aside from these vents and the smoke & carbon monoxide detectors (inside the house that I am going to camouflage the covers to match the natural wood they are mounted on) we have NO white plastic anywhere on show :bigsmile:

    We have bought our roof tiles from Keymer to get round the passivent colour matched resin ridge tile issue that I posted on another thread. Keymer have attached their own handmade clay tiles to the plastic ridge system.

    Also it is a very easy to fit total clip together kit system. An easy DIY job should you want to.
