Hi Can any one recommend a solar PV firm that will supply and fit in London. I have had two firms not willing to even view the house because my wife could not be present!!

You have to be gay or living in sin or sad-and-single to get PV these days? Maybe I've been misunderstanding my more knuckle-scrapping co-workers when they mutter:

    She's FiT.

    It's a tough old world! B^>

    She is the Cat's Mother.

You could say in a very strong French Accent that you already have one and you fart in their general direction

Typical double-glazing salesman tactics. Only willing to turn up if both the decision makers are present.

You need to avoid these companies in any case.

Anyone want to lend me a wife and see if they use the usual tactic of selling the soft cuddly 'saving the planet for the children' to her and selling me the 'kWh' side. Willing to youtube it

Wholeheartedly endorse Ted's comment....if you both have to be present then they want to close the deal on the night (day?) in question and won't go quietly into aforesaid night if you don't accept their wunderbar, Earth-saving offering (tactics are likely the 'drop-sell' close, giving maybe 25-30% discount...only if you buy now, mind, then throw the deal with considerable force. The best of this ilk have to make a call to their superior to 'authorise' this special deal, getting an ear-chewing for allowing you such a 'low' price...all because you may be allowed to participate in the firm's local promotional scheme...aren't you honoured!

Reminds me of a quote we had from a major DG uPVC firm. Just £2400 per window, AND a special discount for immediate acceptance. I don't react well to pressure selling, had problems with plastic anyway, and we ended up with real hardwood at just over £500 apiece (6 windows, more to follow).

Moral of the fore-shortened story: If they have nothing to worry about - ie their offer IS the best thing since (and even before) sliced bread, (a/c to the way the sales-pitch anyway), then there IS no time-pressure. But they know that if you have time, you WILL discover a better deal. The supposed big discount is apparently to reassure your buyer's-remorse 7th sense, should you be fool enough to accept, that you have had a gut-wrenchingly good deal. The opposite and equal reaction, justification-of-purchase, then kicks in and they are laughing all the way to the financial institution amoral enough to allow them to hold their money.

Crusoe mentions an important point, the finance. The commission on that can be very good. They are often selling finance/insurance and not PV systems. 5:45AM on a Monday is a great time to have a rant about sales.

Ted's spot on -avoid them like the plague. Also, beware the ads that come unsolicited through the door. Two have come through recently which refer to the feed-in tariff, but neither of the installers is MCS registered. It's well worth checking on the MCS website - because if they aren't you won't get the money.

You can search our directory for London-based installers with feedback from previous customers at: http://www.yougen.co.uk/search/

PVFIT: We don't much like direct advertising in the threads: indeed it is explicitly prohibited if you look at the pinned threads at the top of this site.

May I suggest that you edit your comment ASAP to convert it to a 'Whisper' to the person starting the thread to hide the details from public view (as I did when I suggested my preferred London suppliers)?

It is remarkable that double-glazing/cladding/home improvements/conservatory/solar thermal/PV salesmen have been running the same game for what?, 30 years now, just changing product from time to time. But presumably it does work often enough to be worth doing. I don't know how they live with themselves, unless they believe their own puffery after a while. I hope the internet is making their lives harder.

Then they aren't the sort of company you want to be dealing with. If your co-owner isn't present their special offer for signing on the spot doesn't work.

Salesmen can be great fun if you know how they think....if they drive an expensive car they will usually park way down the road even if there is a space right outside. In the days before mobile phones they would ask to use your land line to call head office and see if the boss will reduce the price or has any special offers. They allways do but back then you could have great fun with the redial button after they have gone.
