I'm considering making my own windows. I'd buy the glazing units. I know there is information elsewhere on the forum about glazing units (ie; optimum coatings, spacers, gas fillings and the size of the gaps between the panes). But I can't find any good drawings of thermally broken wood frames that I could copy to make my own frames. Does anybody know of any? Perhaps laminating cork and wood is the way to go, as suggested on another thread.
There is no shortage of pictures of window sections. Most window suppliers have them. Do you mean you need details other than sections? (See russel, rawington, greensteps, green building store, ecomerchant/vrogum, katzbeck, ID products, adpol). ID products put theirs together from a system, so that might be interesting if you can get the same stuff.
Not sure if any of these are relevant or of interest;- hdhardware.co.uk coastalcsi.co.uk spilka.com becker-team.de (unsure if available in UK) ravenseals.co.uk barrier-components.co.uk maco.uk.net I cannot as yet recommend from personal use but will be investigating in near future
I'll email some drawings to you, but have you read the other thread about thermally-breaking a window? It's untried on a diy basis so you'd be heading into (relatively) unknown territory.
The way the windows are installed make a hugh difference as well and i assume all this effort is part of a larger project, with the effort involved manufacturing your own timber windows you should also concider the amount of airtight seals you employ and the way they are installed, also as first suggested instalation is key and if the windows are internally opening and EWI is also being used then the insulation can be brought around to almost meat the glass(as with internorm passive) this would require no thermal break in the timber?
