Or just use html tags like this:

    <blockquote><cite>original author</cite> quoted text</blockquote>

in html mode (I've posted this in text mode so the tags show up)

Thanks guys, my misunderstanding of continuity not being given through water within the pipe has been cleared up.

Just wanted to pick up on this thread again with an update.

Trenches dug and new MDPE pipe laid, water board inspector been today and approved work. 8 week wait now until they can connect me up. Asked about what I should do about the old lead pipe. Inspector said I could get a plumber to temporarily connect the MDPE to the lead at the junction between my drive and the pavement, then salvage the lead up to the house, then backfill. Alternatively, wait 8 weeks with driveway in a mess then pull out lead when new connection is made. Final option is to backfill now and just bury the lead, leaving MDPE end exposed for hook up later.

First option sounds tempting but plumbers round here charge 100 quid just to get out of bed, so probably not worth it for the sake of retaining 15m of scrap lead. So left me wondering if there any DIY options to temporarily (but securely) connect 25mm MDPE to 1 inch lead pipe, until water board do the proper connection.

Attached pic. Lead pipe branches off with 2 feeds, to be replaced with single new entry, better located under stairs.

And yes that is a gas pipe in yellow, buried about 6 inches underground. Nearly put my spade clean through it when digging the trench!
