http://www.wind-watch.org/news/2011/09/01/london-olympics-drops-carbon-offset-plan/

Apparently because there are no UK based certified green offsetting schemes...

Officially, if you want to go down certified carbon- offsetting all projects have to be overseas, so if we plant a lot of trees in Essex that just doesn’t count.

and does anyone know what this paragraph is talking about?...

In June 2010, the Olympic Delivery Authority, the public organization responsible for developing and constructing new Games’ venues and infrastructure, was forced to abandon plans for a 2-megawatt wind turbine in the Olympic Park because it contravened health and safety regulations embedded in an EU Machinery Directive. Ecotricity, a U.K. green energy company, had won the contract to supply the turbine.

I expect it was a 'cheap one', that doesn't pass rigorous EU Machinery Directive. Maybe too high profile to risk blades falling off or lightening fire in bad weather or not enough wind?

It was an Ecotricity turbine AFAIK, and Ecotricity doesn't do "cheap" and "dangerous". It'll be risk of blade throw or shedding of ice at other times of year that may have scuppered it, I'll guess.

Rgds

Damon

 Hi,
from the 2012 site
A number of factors have changed the industry environment in which the Olympic Park wind turbine project was being delivered and led to a thorough examination of the turbine proposals on the Eton Manor site. For example, new wider safety legislation which applied to design elements of this particular wind turbine (specifically the internal operator lift) came into effect - the preferred bidder’s turbine supplier for the project felt unable to comply with these new regulations before the Games and withdrew from the project.

I think the insides were accesible by a humanbean the tower had to comply with work place leglislation etc

Cheers mike up North

The regs don't just change overnight. What company allows their products to become so out of date they fail to comply with latest regulations and can't be sold?
