The FIT tariffs at around 40p meant that for green building minded individuals the choice of PV was a bit of a no brainer...

However with things more marginal and potentially more subject to government whim, is this really the best place for £10k to go to for an individual to...

    a) reduce personal/household impact
    b) reduce global emissions

Assuming all has been done on heat loss and solar thermal, other options on a like for like (or better) basis economically could be:

    - buy shares in community of national renewables
    - covert the car to run waste vegetable oil
    - ultra low energy appliances

    any thoughts...

    They were until FITs changed!

Now even with only half the incentive they are still pretty good, micro-generation has a place.

other things could be -- get an electric car, dont burn wood etc, wear a pullover....

Buy Ecotricity's EcoBond2? Buy into small community schemes with longer-term savings/reserves? Behaviour changes?

How about a shares in a company that gets paid by results. Those results being the reduction in people's bills. Say 50% of the reduction over 10 years.
This would allow Insulation, Rain Water harvesting / grey water, Solar Thermal, Solar PV, other micro-generation schemes - but place an important emphasis on reduction in demand, rather than increase in production.

The long time frame to ensure problems are addressed with unforseen problems or poor workmanship.

All at zero or 5% VAT. No cost to anyone really.

And if what I just found from a quick google was correct, even at 21p it's still more than twice what the "pioneers" who are now on ROC-FITs are getting? 9p/kWh for < 50kWp?

Not with our Grid Intensity, there is only a very small window when we over generate and have lower than average CO2e emissions.

James, was your roof ideal for solar?

If so I'm sure there will soon be more affordable and efficient PV panels coming along. Make sure you put the wiring in before your walls are finished. Much simpler than doing it later and cheap enough not to worry about not using it.

In the mean time you could stick the money in the Ecology Building Society who will lend to others for their green building and refurb projects.

.....and I do like the convert the car plan - would be good for your ECO-Green-consultant-architect image to turn up in that - did you ever choose a name for it?

How many of these 'ethical' banks have lent out to the PV industry in the UK?

The Ecology Building Society says "If we can see an environmental benefit in your project, we have an interest in supporting you. "

http://www.ecology.co.uk/downloads/literature/mortgagelendon.pdf but don't specifically mention PV.
