Good-evening all you wonderful green builders :)
I'm seeking your unbiased expertise/knowledge and advice.

Due to the current economic climate I have at least 4 'families' who will become 'homeless' within the next 12 months. This dilemma keeps me awake at nights because I have a field where they all could stay. HOWEVER.. . .

I have seen touring caravans ignite within seconds and burn to the ground,

I've heard of people dying through carbon monoxide poisoning,

and I know it would be worthless to offer my field as temp accomodation, if they then spend massive amounts of money trying to keep themselves warm.

So. . . . . I 'm thinking. . .. Who can direct me to sites which are selling SUPER INSULATED STATIC CARAVANS?
ENERGY EFFICIENT PORTACABINS???? ECO LOG CABINS?????? and I'd appreciate all your advice and comments :)

Many many thanks and happy Christmas :)

They do plumbed/wired 'pods', you can drop onto a levelled base.

I have only seen a small 'single room' extension version, but they might be worth a look?

    Good luck...

I can't remember if you are in the UK but if so you can expect problems with the planners if they stay more than 30 days. That's because you will need Planning Permission for "change of use" from agricultural land to caravan site. They can be very hot on this especially if they think they are travellers. In some cases you can delay enforcement but if the council really want to they can serve injunctions and ask for costs etc

Should also check the rules on social housing provision with Shelter and similar organisations. If they are being made homeless the council may have an obligation to rehouse them, but you can bet it's easy to loose that right. For example if they move out of the area what happens? What happens if they are evicted from your field because they break planning laws? Would that also relieve the council of any oligation they might have to rehouse? You can bet the council won't be keen to house what they might see as "travellers". Best check because it might be possible to make things worse for them.

I believe some modern Portacabins meet Building Regulations levels of insulation...

I don't believe making the accomadation portable automatically gets around planning.

You don't need planning permission to park a caravan within the garden of a house, nor to use one in your garden as a habitable room that is ancillary to the house. However you do need PP if it's used as a seperate dwelling.

If the land isn't the garden of a house (eg it's agricultural land) you will need PP for change of use to caravan site if they are to remain there more than 28 days per year.

Just for info: It's a myth that putting adverts on a vehicle or trailer gets around the need for PP....

    http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/planningandbuilding/pdf/321506.pdf

Class B: an advertisement displayed on or in any vehicle normally employed as a moving vehicle. This includes boats (any vessel on any inland waterway or in coastal waters), trains or aeroplanes. This does not include vehicles used
principally for the display of advertisements e.g. stationary vehicles or trailers in fields or lay-bys used for advertising purposes.
