I needed a temporary solution to keeping direct sunlight out of a south facing window.... so I taped a black garbage bag against the glass (4/16/4 argon filled, low-e). Within 20 minutes there was a loud crack and the inside pane had a 40cm crack in it due to the heat build up between the plastic and glass

Is this normal behaviour for glass windows, and was I just being a numpty - or could I argue a manufacturing defect with the glass provider?

It isn't normal for a d/g unit to have a piece of black plastic taped over it, so hardly surprising that its behaviour wasn't normal.

That said, it's always worth a punt to get the unit exchanged, depends on how long it's been in there. They may, however, play the standard card and counter-claim that the breakdown was caused by faulty fitting, effectively putting the onus on you to prove otherwise.

Like I said, worth a punt. Nothing to lose. Just don't tell them what you did!

FWIW until a couple of days ago I was running a little solar thermal related experiment which involved a "black body" temp sensor[1] placed against a SSE facing d/g window, as a crude simulation of what might be happening inside an ET in similar conditions.

In good morning sunshine that was seeing over 70C (the sensor can't read higher than that). The experiment was terminated when it dawned on me that it might not be a good idea to have something that hot against a d/g unit...

[1] It's a black painted aluminium disk, well insulated behind and to the sides, with a temp sensor in the middle. I normally use it for night time cloud / clear sky detection.
