    Hi

I have a boiler room that is ventilated to the outside but the room above it gets quite cold as there is only rockwool between the joists. I was thinking about insulating the ceiling further by adding kingspan below the existing plasterboard and then covering over with another layer of plasterboard. However the boiler is a log fired one so there is always the possibillity of a fire risk. Is there a less chemical alternative insulation boards that is non flammable?

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

how much height/depth do you have available?

foamglass does not burn but would be a lot more expensive than rockwool and the rockwool would insulate better

Plasterboard does burn, how about a fireproof board ceiling lining?

AFAIK there are 3 types of plasterboard, normal (white coloured) water resistant (green) and fire resistant, but I don't know much about the fire resistant type, it might be worth investigating - or can any one else here give the specs.?

There are various fireproof boards. Multipro (from resistant.co.uk) is one that isn't outrageously expensive and is also a _lot_ tougher than plasterboard (but still quite brittle so needs adequate support) . £23ex VAT for 9mm 1200x2400 sheets, also avaialble in 6 and 12mm.

I'd just use rockwool for fireproof insulation.

Why do you want to prevent heat from the boiler room from heating up the cold room above? Surely the heat would be better used to heat that cold room?

    Hi

Sorry for the delay in responding- been very busy.

Paul - The problem is that the boiler is a beast of a log gassifying one so we batch load it and it is off a lot of the time. As it requires an unrestricted air source there are huge vents to the room it is in. Therefore the room is cold and draughty.

Tony - We have about 200mm spare space. Rockwool would be ideal but I would need to put batons up to support the multipro board that Wookey mentions. That said cold bridging wont be an issue now that I think about it.

Wookey - many thanks - ill check it out.

    Many thanks yet again
