    Hello everybody, just a short introduction. We are building a timberframe house here in France, south of Paris, so the climate is not so difficult to parts of the UK. Unfortunately there does not seem to many people in this area that know much about these types of constructions, so hopefully looking for some advice from others and possibly providing some of the experiences we've had to date.

    Have not done a timber frame house but live in a totally timber one and done a small oak extention to it .
    Theyare warm in winter and cool in sumer compared to a brick one

    Hello Richard. I too live in France, but in the South West towards the Pyrénées mountains. I am hoping to build my own house here at some point in the near future but again, It is difficult to find anyone else who has done something similar nearby. I don't honestly know whether to go for a timber framed house (or steel framed or....). Any tips and help gratefully received!

    A friend of mine is in the (long) process of building a house south of Bordeaux. He has used the hollow core clay blocks as the main structure and even though it is not complete is the coolest (as in not hot) house around. His neighbours use it to sit in when he isn't there! He took insulation out with him as there was nothing comparable there (or too expensive).

    I'd always advocate using a construction method the local trades are familiar with, especially in an environment you might not be familiar with. Add to that with what you can bring. Also, your needs may well be different. I suspect an air tight house is the last thing you want for instance! Climate should influence how you build.

    Timber frame is becoming very popular in France now.... look for 'ossature bois'.
