Just started to gather quotes for the windows in our Newbuild. They are predominentlly sash windows. Before I approach our local joinery firms I thought I would get a couple of quotes to gauage an average price.
The first of theses from West-Port www.west-port.co.uk came in today and seemed quite reasonable. Has anyone had any experience of this company and/or can anyone recommend a good company (without breaking the bank!) for 2G or 3G sash windows?
Yes and a very informative thread it became on the technicalities of sash windows but unfortunately the likes of Vrogum and Winchester Joinery were very expensive and Eurostyle have been inept at providing a quote.
So I just wanted to know if anyone knew of West Port and were there any other reasonably priced manufacturers out there that could be recommended.
Allan Brothers do very good sliding sash windows. Also check out jeld wen and ecomerchant (burdens). We used Allan Brothers and were very happy, not least that they delivered on site bang on time.
West Port are part of the biggest window making group in europe and in my experience suffer from cheap tech staff who don't know the product. Ruled them out of prev enquiries. I think they only did 2G - "3G not justified in UK climate". But may have changed.
Local joiners may be OK for sash windows, which aren't so sensitive to warping so can get away with non-laminated timber. The Barnsdale design is the way to go, glaze-in, with small putty-splay like external. Local joiner cd incr sash depth even more, to accomodate triple glass - but that becomes extremely heavy, Poss use HeatMirror plastic for the middle pane.
Thanks guys. Have already requested a quote from Allan Brothers, they look like a good product. Barnsdale looks expensive, but I will find out and report back.
Ended up going the Polish Interiors route - they do, do weights and pulleys for little extra cost but on our build we need the slimmer frames. If I were rennovating it would be w & p every time.
Anyway, for aryone on a tight budget like me I ended up with toughened 3G, hardwood windows with an acceptably narrow glazing bar 19mm

I have used custom made sash windows on three projects. Mainly verticals but also some horizontals (yorkshires). There is a local guy near me in North Yorkshire who makes a good robust window at a very reasonable cost. I've put my money where my mouth is on five projects with him (the other were not sash windows). He is hopeless on delivery dates though and he does not paint.
