Windows - I never thought they could be so difficult.

Looking for a quality timber and/or aluclad casement window range. How do Jeld Wen and Russell Timber Tech compare - not just on price but quality?

Are there other manufacturers that whilst a bit more on cost are worth the extra - without going top end?

    Experiences / recommendations welcome.

Fostertom - if you are reading this how did you get on with your recent sourcing of windows re-Muster Joinery etc?

Going to report properly when I get a moment. What Jeld Wen 'make' are you thinking of? I got a price (not competitive) for Scot Vu which turned out to be 'in collaboration with Jeld Wen' or something.

I was looking at the Tilt & Turn & Dream Vu ranges directly off of their site.

Russell seem good value to me. Their prices are good and I saw their product at ecobuild and it looked fine. They are also relatively local. Some on here have presumably actually fitted some? I associate Jeld Wen with crappy (i.e 'bog standard/cheap') windows from the builders merchant, but maybe they do some good stuff too. I've bought from both Greensteps and Green Building Store ('cheapest' ecocontract range) and they are very similar and also both good value. I've been impressed with the quality of service from both companies (problems in both cases, but comprehensively dealt with, although GBS are a bigger outfit and it shows). So I think they are good examples of the middle ground.

    Thanks wookey.

Are you saying that GBS is an example of the middle ground between Jeld Wen and Russell or similar to Russell (assuming Russell themselves are seen as a middle ground offering)?

Agree with wookey about Jeld Wen. Haven't bought any of their stuff for years having had a stand-up row with an idiot from their tech department who insisted the panels on one of their doors had shrunk because it hadn't been given the number of coats of sealant specified. FOUR coats not enough, then!? He refused to either exchange the door (fitting at my expense) or refund. Customer had to come between us. Ended up making a new (identical) door. Customer so angry with the guy she insisted on paying half the price of the new door. Can't remember whether it was TP, B&Q or Howdens I bought it from, but remember they said Jeld Wen insisted that their "technician" assess all complaints and decide on the outcome. Cut their door up for kindling.

I believe the last time I spoke with Russell Timber, they said they only manufacture doors. They actually buy in the windows. May take a little of the locally sourced shine off. May have miss-understood, but that's what the person in their showroom in Glasgow told me. I have bought 2g and 3g windows from them, and also insulated doors, and they are well priced. Delivery can be a bit steep for less than 10 units, but luckily I have a father-in-law who does a collection service for me.

Here are a few others I came across at Eco-build - no connection or experience with any of these, but may be worth a follow up..

    - katzbeck; ardenwindows; west port; rationel - googling these should get you to their sites

I was saying that GBS Ecocontract/Greensteps was a bit more expensive and slightly better spec than Russell, but a lot cheaper than various 'top end', as you put it, window suppliers. (GBS do a whole range of windows, and many of them are fairly top-end - they had what looked like a very nice passivhaus-level (Uw=0.79 IIRC) window at ecobuild which was 'only 10% more than ecocontract'. Very interesting.
