Posted By: Mike (Up North)Beacuse there is potentially such a huge difference in DHW requirements (quite high) and space heat requirements (quite low) I favour splitting them entirely.

If you had gas and electriciy already I might agree with splitting. However the servicing costs on the gas and the standing charges on both put me off.

Very pleased we didn't get gas and that we spent on PV and solar thermal to supplement the little 5kw heat pump. There's also an immersion in our 300l tank but hadn't really considered using it on really cold days (just got put in as back up as only about £15 to add it in) - though I'll have to look at the calcs above to see below which temperature it would be worth it for us.

    thanks!

Thanks GreenPaddy - I think it would be worth going for a heat pump for our heating needs. The electric costs were _per month_ in a particular season. The bulk of our energy usage does appear to be on heating - I estimate well over £1000 per year (feeling very guilty at this point). We spend very little on hot water in comparison.

GaryB - thanks for the info about air recirculating systems and the pros/cons about various space heating solutions. I do appreciate the time you spent. I've been looking at various ducted recirculating air systems over the last couple of days (as well as decorating). Very interesting and may just be the ticket for us! Thanks!
