General: Cold Larder cupboard

    There will be no space for a larder as such in our new bungalow (UK south coast) but we do have a rear, north-facing unheated lobby which will double as the utility room. I would like to incorporate some sort of cold cupboard (say 600mm x600mm x room height) with a direct vent to the outside. While it won't remove the need for a fridge altogether it will mean we can manage with a smaller one. Has anyone here tried anything like this? Would we need to insulate the cupboard itself or have a special door? I was thinking that a slab of stone either on the floor or as a shelf would help keep it cool.
    Any ideas/suggestions as to the best way to construct this would be very welcome.

    I have one and I built a big piece of slate in to it which goes through the wall to outside on the NE side of the house and it is always shaded there. Then the walls are insulated with 50mm of rigid foam to the house and utility room but very poorly to outside. Works very well for vegetables, drinks and things like that. The door is draft sealed and like you say it is ventilated to outside. Mine is only half height so I insulated the top too.

    Plenty of ventilation with zinc gauze to keep the lies out.
    Porous ceramic that can be topped up with water -as the water evaporates the material gets cold.

    Has anyone ever tried using the cold exhaust from MHRV to coll an outside larder?

    It will be at least five percent warmer than outside air and likely warmer than that so a non starter. The output from a heat pump may be bot that is a fridge:bigsmile:
