I've told the story about the morris dancing episode in my life, so won't go into it again here.

I shared the general English view, as eloquently espoused by Clarkson, that morris dancers were a strange lot to be viewed with suspicion by any red-blooded English male, but on getting dragged (literally) into the activity I found the truth to be as far from Clarkson's view as the ECHR is from the real world.

Nothing mystic about it, it's just the best way of working up a thirst ever invented and having a bloody good laugh whilst doing it.

The only thing that drove me out was the fact that membership of teams seems to feature at least a third of the number being teachers, which means that the committee can make firm decisions on how a meet will go which is then clearly communicated to the team which then votes unanimously to accept the arrangements, which get totally re-arranged on the day at the whim of the few used to exercising their authority over a class of eight-year-olds and who brook no argument. Something about teachers!

Mid-morning in York. Excellent.

A foul calumny, Jeremy.

We were once dancing locally in Dawley, one of the mining villages that were incorporated into the Telford New Town. Having been nominated as the gofer to order the beer for the next break, I was standing at the bar when two guys got up and walked across. I thought, "Oh dear, I'm about to have the piss taken something rotten here." But instead they started telling me about how sad it was that a local tradition involving the old mining community had died out.

Apparently, they were the last of the tradition handed down from father to son for generations, when they'd dress up in an old frock of their Mom's, knock up some crude 'instruments' often involving nothing more than a broomstick with bottle tops nailed loosely to it, black their faces and go around from door to door at certain times of the year and dance outside until they were 'paid' to go away, the payment being anything from money to fruit or veg. Their kids refused to have any part in it. That's how local traditions die. And we bemoan the absence of an "English identity". If you take the mick out of your traditions it's hardly surprising.

Smashing blokes, they paid for the beer!

For me the basic problem with the sceptics is not that they have strange thoughts, but that their views somehow carry weight. It is a problem with our society that insists that everyone's view is important - really?

An example that still annoys me is with a local BBC TV broadcast - an East Midlands town had just opened a new arts centre that had gone over budget (nothing new or news worthy there - probably down to poor briefing!) and the TV reporter to fill the time slot asked random people on the street if they thought the new arts centre was worth the inflated cost - not surprisingly they said no, it's terrible - hang on, they hadn't seen it, been in it (it had only opened that day), had no idea why it was overspent, but their views had to be heard. What rubbish - so instead of employing a decent reporter / journalist that could delve into the facts of the story, they simply relied on public opinion.

It's back to the media in my humble opinion - they can't be bothered to do a proper job so use Internet rubbish instead. One Telegraph environment reporter openly omitted to not taking the time to go to Norwich to interview the UEA professor at the centre of the climate change emails fiasco as he relied on Internet articles for all his information! Fortunately he has now left the Telegraph I gather.

The blown ones that I've taken apart have all had rather nasty switched mode converters in the base, with no screening at all and minimal suppression. My guess is that they'd radiate harmonics of their switching frequency pretty much all over the RF spectrum. All the ones I've taken apart have been CE marked, which implies that they've been through RF emissions testing, but there are very large numbers of counterfeit CE stickers around. One Chinese manufacturer that I took to task over supplying dodgy CE marked electrical equipment replied to my question by stating that "CE" on their goods meant "China Export".............
