    Hello. Long time no visit.

I'll be flushing and re-filling my solar thermal soon and will want a way to dispose of about 20Litres of old glycol solution.

What's the best idea? I don't like the concept of the drain, but I have no idea what to do with it.

If it's pink jollop, aka Tyfocor, it mixes well with G&T, esp good in cold weather, stops you freezing.

It is a controlled disposal. Ask your local authority what they suggest you do with it. They may even have a disposal point.

    Hi Crusoe.

I'll ask for sure. I can't help thinking they'll look at me strangely and "Not here mate".
Perhaps the G&T is the better idea :)

I was told by one supplier GSHP ground circuit fluid was harmless to all, other than cats, which it would kill.
presumed this to be nonsense.

Propylene glycol is used as an artificial sweetener isn't it?

Take it to your local garage and see if they'll take it as old antifreeze (or ask what they do with it?). Otherwise, put it in a paint bucket, and take it to your local waste disposal site, and dispose of as paint maybe?

Jamesingram, it looks like it's not complete nonsense. Maybe it won't actually kill them but from the following, which looks at first glance like it's reasonably sourced, there's some issue with cats which doesn't apply to humans and dogs:

I've lived on this planet for nearly 56 years without anybody feeling the necessity to mention to me anything about cats and antifreeze. Today I came across two references to the subject. The other:

Why's it suddenly so important that I know about this?

(Though the second one's confusing propylene and ethylene glycols - unless they used propylene glycol in cars 60+ years ago.)

    Blame QI

Have heard that if you eat a dogs liver you will get very ill, and that elephants can't jump.

Well as an ex-cat owner, but nowadays someone who understands all too well the misery of the dug-up salad seedlings, perhaps I'll refrain from comment on the cat front. I like the garage idea. Thanks.
