<![CDATA[Hi Nick P and Nik H...<br /><br />My sketch was to show proposed insulation as part of a loft conversion. 25mm gap between felt/roof tiles, and top side of insulation between roof rafters. This would join (somehow?!) to the EWI, which would wrap over the top of the cavity wall, thus providing a continuous blanket all the way around the house with no cold spots.<br /><br />Questions I haven't yet managed to find the answers to:<br /><br />1. Do I 'dot and dab' the insulation boards to the external brick wall?<br />2. If not, what fixings do I use?<br />3. Do I have to leave an air gap between insulation and brick? I assume NOT, as this will only increase the potential of interstitial condensation.<br />4. Is a french drain/floor gutter a good idea to carry any rain away from the house, and prevent it going underneath the insulation into the brick wall?<br />5. Please can you give examples of the wire mesh used to fix to the insulation, which will give the external render something to grab on to?<br />6. Should I be using a breathable or non-breathable external render? I assume NON breathable. Examples please if you can.<br /><br />Most importantly, where should I pay most attention to preventing condensation build up? I gather this is the least risky method of insulating ones house and not causing condensation. <br /><br />I'm going to try this myself, so please relay any horror stories, and things to avoid, and things to remember!!]]>

<![CDATA[Perhaps ask James ingram, as I know he's done a few EWIs. What insulant are you using? If it's not a breathable insulant, no apparent need for a breathable render.<br /><br />Clan Insulations do a system using BASF Neopor 'Platinum' EPS (Lamba 0.030 IIRC):<br /><br />http://www.thinjoint.com/tech-frame.html (Click on ‘finishing system’). <br /><br />The person to contact is Chris Hirst (Chris@clan.co.uk).<br /><br />And for photographs of a house done with this system, see:<br /><br />http://www.flickr.com/photos/37083475@N08/?saved=1<br /><br />Wood-fibre products are available from http://www.natural-building.co.uk/<br /><br />*Other suppliers exist, but I know some on here have had experience of Clan.<br /><br />1. Do I 'dot and dab' the insulation boards to the external brick wall?<br /><br />No, I would say. Full coverage adhesive and a few mech fixings<br /><br />2. If not, what fixings do I use?<br /><br />Lots of choice. Ask your system provider.<br /><br />3. Do I have to leave an air gap between insulation and brick? I assume NOT, as this will only increase the potential of interstitial condensation.<br /><br />No!! It's not interstitial condensation, it's getting outside air between insulation and fabric. Best way of ensuring the inulation does almost nothing!<br /><br />4. Is a french drain/floor gutter a good idea to carry any rain away from the house, and prevent it going underneath the insulation into the brick wall?<br /><br />Probably. Big thread on this forum re EWI/French drains.<br /><br />5. Please can you give examples of the wire mesh used to fix to the insulation, which will give the external render something to grab on to?<br /><br />Usually it's not wire, but a glass-fibre mesh which beds in the first render coat. Unless you usse wood-fibre and lime render, most of the renders are like 'fat paint'.<br /><br />Hope that helps.]]>
