I am working on a new build project and im interested in installing Pv tiles into the roof.

Im looking for a roof integrated system which can be used with either slates, plain or pantiles. Can anyone reccomend a suitable system that can be mounted over a standard batton roof system?

There seem to be a few options avaiaible and id be interested in others experiences?

    Thanks.

I looked at the C21e ones but they were costly, much more expensive than ordinary panels, plus they fit to metal battens, which is fine if you want to integrate them with compatible tiles/slates, but perhaps a bit awkward otherwise. The high price led me to look at integrating standard panels into the roof, which is certainly a lot cheaper. There are several kits available to do this now, essentially just a membrane roof covering under the area where the panels fit, with top, bottom and edge flashings that are similar to the way a roof window would fit.

I would agree with with JSHarris on this and got this tip years ago from a green consultant Tim someone I met at a show 10 years ago, also you save on a few sq/m of tiles/slates. Make sure if you dont do the linking kits and flashi ngs yourself that you double check these

Make sure you have some spares too, they may not be available in a few years time.

Same's true of Velux flashings - can't get the old ones now, to re-install perfectly sound old-design Velux windows.

Thanks for the responses but the customer has requested I use the tile version as they look better on the roof.

Ive seen the tile manufacturers like marey have solar ones that integrate with their tiles, the C21 from solar centrury and romag also do one that fits with any tile but not sure which to go for.

Does anyone reccomend or had any experiences with any of the solar tile systems?

    Thanks

I'd just check with the customer that they're prepared to pay double the amount a roof integrated fully black panel system would cost before going too far down this line.

We've yet to do a quote for these where the customer doesn't change their mind entirely when they see the price difference and think what else they might be able to spend that 5k on.

Integrated solar pv tiles are available only to go with large flat concrete interlocking tiles or with slates, I am waiting for plain tile ones to come out -- must be soon now.

I only need 1.38kw for sap. Ive contacted Romag and their solar tiles seem quite resonable, around £2,100 for a 1.4kw kit including flashings etc. This is cheaper than some other quotes I recieved for roof integrated and is universal so can be used with any kind of tiles. I agree its more expensive than on roof pannels but from the pictures on the website they look great and customer is hapy they are made in the UK too.

    thanks for the advice.

One of the problems with roof integrated systems is that as they get hot in the sun they loose efficiency and I suspect it also shortens their life too.PVT is not that great a solution to the problem as collecting hot water also reduces the efficiency as it it warms the panels too. I have see a system that dumps the excess heat into cold water and continually bins it in order to keep the panels cool.

Posted By: tony... roof integrated systems is that as they get hot in the sun
ideally cooled by airflow in modified batten space, as collection for an into-ground interseasonal heat store scheme - where the ground, still cooled from supplying last winter's house heat, provides limitless cool return-airflow, i.e. much cooler than summer daytime outdoor air.

I had heard that but the Romag ones im looking at come with a 25 year linear output warranty so the manufactures couldnt be too concerned about reduced efficiency.
