We had a kitchin fire awhile back unfortunatly the MHRV I fitted kept the fire fuelled a bit longer(according to the fire chief) is there a way of shutting them down in this senario. eventually the main earth trip stopped it but it makes you think !

Surprised they are not fitted with a smoke detector which then feeds a trip switch?

interesting link easyBuilder, needed one of them on the extractor hood, as the fire spread from the toaster ! to a chip pan then demolished the extractor hood, my cousin heard the alarm and put it out, 4 hours later the wind changed direction found some embers in the outlet and managed to ignite the roof felt, after that there was no stopping it, stiil the insurance replaced the roof fitted warmcell (400mm) and tyvek, much better job now

Sorry using general term for smoke detectors. I believe some work on heat rather than smoke, which matbe more appropriate for your cooking Biff ;op

The smoke detector should be fitted in the inlet duct of the MVHR plant. Expect phantom trips. FYI, industrial plant are fitted with sniffer tubes that draw air from suspect areas into a central control box where each tube is "switched" in turn to the smoke detector and then via the one extract fan to waste. The claimed advantage is one detector, no wiring (importent for refineries etc.)

Newbie here ( from Dublin ) - So sorry for jumping in and "gravedigging" - but this really alarms me

When installing HRV units it is important to understand the significant risk of fire spread that they present .

All upper floors must acheive at least 30 mins fire resistance . Typically we rely on floor boarding ( must be fully intact ) above joists and plasterboard below - must be fully intact

Where ceilings are opened up for vent outlets - the fire resistance of the floor is shot to pieces . A fire will soon melt the outlet and duct away and attack the underside of the floorboards

The terminal ( or one like it ) fitted to Easy Builders Kitchen extract - should be installed at every outlet and inlet

Another important factor is that smoke not flames or heat is statistically the biggest cause of death from house fires . Any HRV system must be linked to either a fire alarm or smoke detector system to immediately switch off in the event of fire .

I saw this video clip 25 years ago in college - never forgot it
