I subscribe to Green Building magazine but I've just been given a magazine subscription gift voucher and was wondering what other building, design, renovation, self build magazines Forum members would suggest I subscribe to and which one would be best for the aspiring self builder?

Why not something sciency, they often have stuff about buildings in them, or a trade mag like Renewable World r what ever it is called.

To broaden the outlook, see how the rest of industry is designing 'things' - including much emphasis on life cycle implications of design decisions - Develop 3D. Free, actually, to me anyway (as is its sister AECMagazine) - so you still have your book token to spend!

    Why not "Which?" magazine?

We were going to get a self build mortgage via buildstore but decided against, but we know getting a copy of Build It and Home Improvement every month. It's free and I do read it a bit, but to be honest almost all mags are the same - written by journalists with limited technical knowledge, set to such a low common denominator and completely consumerism led. In addition, as well as printing made up letters, and out of date or irrelevant news, they have nothing original to say and recycle old articles.

The guys on my Passiv Haus designer course over in Dublin all said "Construct Ireland" is good, even if you're not in Ireland, but haven't yet seen a copy myself.

Update! I have just looked at their website quickly and read this " Construct Ireland is to be renamed Passive House Plus, with separate editions published for the Irish and UK markets." which seems perhaps even more relevant.

I did have a year's subs to "Grand Designs" and it had virtually the same, state-the-obvious articles and ads for building-bling content every month. Much less interesting than the programmes. I took it mainly for the free tickets offer and I would say the show was moderately useful. Green Building magazine was more useful.

+1 on Construct Ireland, as Robin says it will launch a UK edition under it's new name in December and I think it would be a great way to use your gift voucher.

In a previous job I enquired about advertising rates with Self build & design magazine and as a result they sent me the mag for 12 months free of charge. Not suggesting anything like....

I also got it free for a while but I never really knew how or why.
