The title says it all, is it worth the approx £30 a window premium for self cleaning glass on Velux windows?

I have been told by 3 glazing people that it is not. Mind you two where here in the wettest area of the country (not to be confused with the wettest town. The other was in Hemel Hempstead.

What pitch is the roof? steeper pitches I would say no shallower pitches only may be.

No, onthe the basis that they are easier to clean with a damp rag from inside than most other windows

I was told that only the part that the rain reaches gets cleaned - on a steep pitch the top few cm sheltered by the frame above will remain dirty and this looks worse than uniform dirt! On this basis I decided against. However I'm certainly reducing my solar gain since most haven't been cleaned other than by rain for 2 years.:shamed:

Thanks for the comments. They are a shallow pitch at 32 degrees so should get rain washed. i have decided to go for them as 3 of the five windows are over working areas - Kitchen/utility - and the extra cost also includes lamination of the inner pane, and whilst the likelihood of breakage is minimal, I like the idea of the additional safety feature.

At that price it sounds like a not-to-be-missed bargain.

My thoughts exactly - managed to get 24% discount on Velux list - not sure if that is good, bad or average but time was against me and the orders had to be placed

It is a shame the 3g Velux offering is so expensive compared to their standard. I looked at them for a recent project but the £200-£300 premium per window just seemed excessive, even if it does include the self clean coating.
