    One of my 240v GU10 LED bulbs which has 48 5050 SMDs has lost light from half of the SMDs in a semi circular pattern. Has anyone seen this before or can explain, just out of interest, what has caused it to happen.

    Yes I have just bought some and had exactly this on one bulb. I was told they are wired in series in 2 halfs so if one goes they all go.

    That must be terrible for the expected lifetime figures. Basically any one chip failing makes the lamp useless. What's the warranty?

    Yes I think you are right. I don't think mine have a warranty of any worth but they were cheap and the light on the ones that work is pretty good. On the other hand most electrical appliances are filled with chips and I presume if any of them fail the unit is dead but I suspect there may a difference in the quality of the chips used.

    It's not clear that putting the LED in series does affect the lifetime. Putting them in series may reduce the amount of power dissipated in the bulb. If I remember correctly a 10C difference can double the life of a capacitor for example.

    what is the problem is 1 led failing out of 10 is much more likely than one by itself.

    Since the light from each LED (and hence power input) is a primary design criterion, I don't think you could class a design that changed the power as the same lamp.
