    Hello all

I am considering taking down a wall in my house and making a opening of 2500mm in a 3500mm wide room.

I am have spoken to the structural engineer and he has done me some drawings and calcs, also I have been in touch with the building inspector and he is happy.

I am going to put in a 152x89x16UB and am going to use needles to support the wall above, the only thing I am not 100% confident on is the correct steps to take after the needles are in place.

The pad stones next but do I cut the opening at that point or get the pad stones in, then the steel then brick up then cut the opening out? I have heard different ways of doing it and want to know the best way.

    Thanks all

Once the needles are in, the wall is supported so you can take out the wall, insert the padstones, place the beam then brick up.

Make sure you will be able to get the beam into place with the needles in position. Perhaps put the beam on the floor at the foot of the wall before you do anything?

I don't use needles any more. I use acrow props with attached strongboys

They allow for a much quicker and neater job as all you have to do is cut a slot into the wall before inserting the strongboys. I drill the slot out.

I also do as Colin suggests placing the beam close to the wall before putting the props up

I am even worse with walls above right across and simply do get the new steel in fast with neither needles or strong-boys!
