I suppose the best approach is to do a full bill of quantities and ask for prices from the big boys.
Is anyone more competitive than others? Maybe on-line would be cheaper?

Not necessarily the big boys. Over the past year or two I've collected the names of various possible suppliers from various places. I used prices from firms that publish them online as a guide and then phoned my list around locally to get actual quotes. As it turned out, I bought all the timber from a merchant that I hadn't heard of until a week ago! My carpenter recommended him for quality and when I phoned he had very good prices too.

For the few electrical bits I've bought so far I got them from several different suppliers because prices vary so much.
