Interesting you should choose duckduckgo there. A lot of commercial sites that used google for their site search facilities seem to be switching to duckduckgo lately - something about the way google handles advertising and ad-clicks. And as the Pi crowd will know, it is the default installed search facility on raspbian too.

Can be both good and bad. From the privacy point of view it's obviously good but sometimes Google's ability to guess what you're after can help though sometimes it really gets in the way. I wonder if social polarizations on subjects like vaccines, GM, AGW aren't amplified, at least a bit, by Google directing people to sites which confirm their prejudices.

Because Duckduckgo doesn't assume much (result depends only on the search string, AIUI) it tends to give a more “international” response. This is good sometimes but I often find myself adding “uk” to the search to narrow things down a bit.

The astronomy society I used to be a member of when I lived down south has just changed its domain name to end “.org” rather than “.org.uk”. I think this is foolish - cool URLs don't change and being a bit more specific about your physical domain must help with searches, I imagine.

In general, I tend to use Duckduckgo in the first instance then drop back to Google if I want more.]]>
