HI i'm knew to this and have been reading the forums with great interest, my main interest is in SIPS as my husband has managed to persuade me to knock down our old brick garage at the bottom of our garden and replace it with a SIPS garage.

I've just thought how un environmentally friendly that sounds so I should clarify that the old brick garage has a flat roof that completely needs replacing and the garage is only a single course of bricks which has cracks running throughout, hence the need to replace it however I am salvaging all the old bricks and reusing them to create flower borders around my garden! i'm not replacing the garage just for the fun of it!

The point about SIPS is the 'I' - Insulated. If the garage is going to function as a garage I'm not sure what the point of insulation is, unless a lot of car maintenance in deep sub-zero temperatures is envisaged. How about a plain old-fashioned sectional shed?

my husband wants to keep a garage as he says it adds value to the property! however he doesn't actually intend to use it to stick the car in instead the "garage" will be used as more of a studio for me to work from home in (I make make and decorate cakes, so temp control is important) and he wants somewhere warm to play darts lol we're recycling the old garage door and reusing it so that if we ever come to sell the property we still have a fully functioning garage.
A shed would have been an easier solution but wouldn't be warm enough in the winter for me to work in without having to have a heater on constantly.

Well an insulated studio makes more sense than an insulated garage, right enough. So, what do you want to know about SIPS? My house is made out of them and it hasn't collapsed yet, if that helps.

The first thing to do is to consider the existing garage base. This will be very cold in winter unless insulated.

SIPS? No problem, they've been around for about 50 years after starting life in the US and if the company you're promoting is made up from the guys I think it is then they've been involved in coldstores for years so a well insulated temperature controlled envelope is no big deal to them. It will work well

Thanks thats great news, i'm pretty sure that the base is being insulated too I know the roof is made from sips also, and it's good to know that it will be around for that length of time as I personally don't have any plans to move house again, however i'd be interested from Richard how well his sip house functions as we are considering a double storey extension to the side of our property, is it possible to extend onto a brick property with sips?

Do you have planning permission to use your garage for business purposes? May or may not apply where you are but best to check with the council

oooh hadn't thought of that Stuart, it's more of a hobby at the moment was hoping that by having the garage/studio that it would enable me to turn it into a business and work from home! I will check the rules on that! Thanks

A quick net search shows that as long as the overall character of my dwelling doesn't change (which it wont ) then I don't need planning permission to use the garage. My house will still be a home, if I choose to work from the garage I wont be making any noise/smells my business isn't unusual in a residential area and there will be no increase in cars or people coming to my house so from a quick glance I dont need planning permission, think i'll get it in writing from local planning office tho just to be safe tho!
