    I am considering changing my solar thermal controller. The existing controller uses a Pt1000 sensor in a roof mounted solar collector. My preferred choice of replacement expects input from an NTC 20 k? sensor. Can anyone suggest an affordable converter?

    It would probably be possible to produce something using a https://thepihut.com/products/adafruit-pt1000-rtd-temperature-sensor-amplifier-max31865-ada3648" >PT1000 RTD Temperature Sensor Amplifier, https://thepihut.com/products/adafruit-ds3502-i2c-digital-10k-potentiometer-breakout-ada4286" >DS3502 I2C Digital 10K Potentiometer and a Raspberry Pi Peco or similar if I possessed the necessary making skills.

    However, I would prefer a ready made device that wouldn’t frighten a heating installer!

    Any suggestions?

    Whilst I know nothing about a converters (and only nominal knowledge about sensors) I would be inclined to replace the existing sensor with one that the new kit expects to see. Putting in a converter complicates the system and introduces an additional fault area.

    Can you not get a new controller that will use your existing sensor.? I guess you don't want to change the current sensor because of access? Certainly I would not want to have a go at replacing mine I would need to strip back the roof slates and flashings to gain access presume you would have similar problem. A converter and further connections give rise to potential problems in future due to complexity as PIH mentions.

    Are those sensors for some safety functions such as detecting overheating, or frost protection? If so, perhaps best to stick with the manuf's correct specified sensor?


    You are thinking of connecting together an ADC, microcontroller and DAC? To read the 1000ohm PTC sensor, and produce a voltage/current combo that the new controller will interpret as coming from a 20000ohm NTC sensor. There are microcontrollers with built in ADC and DAC that might simplify the hardware side of this.

    The devils might be in the maintenance - what happens if there's a bug or it falls over, could it damage or upset the solar controller, how do you know when you need to reset it, does it need updates. (Just my experience of microcontroller heating projects!)

    As mentioned here: https://renewableheatinghub.co.uk/forums/thermostats-trvs-pumps-valves/convert-pt1000-to-ntc-20-k%CF%89 the issue is access to the sensor on a second floor roof. My existing solar thermal controller uses a Pt1000 sensor and my preferred upgrade uses NTC 20k?.

    My ideal solution would be a ready made black box that just works and is from a trusted manufacturer. No idea if such a thing exists. Hence, my question.
