So, how does one find a decent one? Based in South Devon if that helps.

Finding one that has a flexible pragmatic approach can be difficult. Quite a few only want to put in the bare minimum of effort for maximum pay.

Anything that is not 'run-of-the-mill' will either panic them or make their eyes glow with pound signs...

For customers who want to engineer I-joist walls and low-carbon foundations, we often recommend:

My architect recommended mine. Thought he had overengineered the specs only to have it confirmed by the BCO who said that the SE doubled his answer and added 60%. Better that way than the other despite the extra cost.

We had a bunch of different ones for different purposes. One for the passive floor slab, one for the timber roof structure, one for the first floor joists, and one for the rest. Most came as part of the materials packages, but we employed the one for the 'rest' mainly on account of his knowledge of straw bales. He did the wall plate calculations. He's in Yorkshire; we're in Suffolk. The others were in Ireland and I don't know where.

OK, so I will see what I can dig up on Fiverr and go from there.

Found a UK based Struct Eng. on Fiverr who described the project as "interesting", so I am gathering together the information he has requested. Will report back on costings and outcome.
