Found this supplier of Danish windows with a showroom in Cardiff I can go and have a look at.

Thinking of aluminium clad windows for all exposed area on the South Wales seafront (150m above sea level)

Any good? Website looks decent but can't find too much information on them, last post on here was 2015

Or any other suppliers? Rationel came in very high from initial costing exercise.

Also going to get some prices for aluminium, anything must be better than my 28 year old pvc windows

I installed my own Nordan 3G windows 15 years ago. Rarely wash them. Haven't repainted them, and they still look good as new. They are timber with an ali trim on the lower frame, so only partial Ali clad. Can't say how that compares with Rationel or others. Apparently Norwegians make great windows, and Swedish great doors (and furniture ;) )

As always, Russell Timbertech 4-12-4-12-4 U1.1 sourced from the Baltic are good quality and unbeatable on price, incl Al faced.

We've considered new plastic but trying to find 'decent' ones in black is difficult or so we are finding.

    Liniar only do a Black/brown

Tom - Russell weren't interested in our project...

Perhaps because black fades too much (too noticeably) so no one produces that colour.

I would avoid plastic if doing again. Some of our windows with top hung sashes have become draughty. They bent slightly in the heat. This time of year I go round with white pvc tape to seal the gap. The side hung ones are ok guess that is because they have a mid stile and esbaglonette catch. Black windows would be worse no doubt.

They're trade, not retail like the local double glazed replacement outfit. They've never turned me down - I do the legwork, knowing their system and options, specifying everything in detail. Then follows a slow and glitchy procedure - they produce a spreadsheet for signing off by me, but usually two or three to and fros correcting their errors and omissions - some weeks. Only then does the delivery period begin. Not for the faint hearted, but worth it. Delivery is usually there in time, if all this happens as soon as the building contract is signed.

Better be sure that your alternative e.g. Nordan, isn't just as hard work, alternatively costly if they undertake a 'retail' service - visit by a rep, takes own dims, talks you thro the options ...

This is what we were thinking, hence starting to look at aluminum or alu-clad

My quick research gives the following companies:

    Russell
    Nordan
    Allan Brothers
    21 Degrees
    Rationel
    Internorm
    Velfac
    Smart Systems
    Senior Architectural

Going to look at a local fabricator of Senior this week along with Nordan as local to Cardiff

A rep from Senior Architectural came around. Very knowledgeable man.

He suggested not to go for the really low u value ones they do and to go fit the ones that will get it down to 1.1 which will be more than plenty.

Anyone have experience with Senior? Seem very similar to Smart. Will be interested to see the costs that come back.

He was familiar with taping the windows and happy to mount externally so I can EWI after.

There's a 25 year guarantee on the powder coating and would use stainless screws and hinges etc. but they can only do external opening as opposed to tilt and turn.

He did suggest tilt and turn aren't the best for exposed areas.

I do think I'm overthinking this retrofit

    Did he say why?

He did suggest tilt and turn aren't the best for exposed areas.
And again, did he have any evidence that was the case?

Only reason I can think of is due to the compexity of the operating mechanism. External openers I guess offer the oportunity that stong winds will favour increasing the sealing by pushing the sash against the seals.

His comments were based on experience of running his fabrication and fitting company for over 30 years.

He mentioned fully and turns have a lot more to go wrong in his experience. He also mentioned that with the exposed area outward opening are always better. Is there actually a reason to have tilt and turn? No point in is being able to clean if the other fixed panel doesn't open mind...

He suggested against the really low u value ones, based on cost versus impact and 1.1 will be more than sufficient. He's going to price both for me but he thinks it's overkill.

We're going to visit the Nordan showroom this week though and then make a decision of either Ali or Ali clad

In Switzerland near all windows open internally and I had tilt & turn in several of my flat/houses some of which were very exposed with no problems. Internally opening windows mean you can have external shutters with all their advantages both summer and winter. I suspect the prejudice against internal opening windows is down to them not being standard in the UK

Went to visit Nordan in Cardiff today. Great looking windows but for our project we think the frames are just too big.

If the price is right looks like we're going to look at the Senior Architectural Systems aluminium range.
