General: aluminium roofing nails

    Has anyone got any views on using aluminium nails for a slate roof. My roofer says they are better that copper as they `give ` a bit and have bigger heads.
    My own experience of aluminium on bikes is that it can go brittle with age.

    Pretty common, London used to insist on Copper , Ali nails are OK in my opinion, will last longer than the slates

    One of the worst mistakes is to use 40mm nails which puncture the sarking! Use 30mm ones !

    Yes, with slates - prob use 40 with concrete tiles.
    What about aluminium, for any purpose, in a marine (cliff top) atmosphere?

    I'd use copper every time, esp in a coastal project. Copper are prob 50% more expensive, but in the grand scheme of things, I would use copper. As to the nail length, the slate thickness needs to be considered, as well as the slate length and head lap, which will alter the angle of the slate and so the nail shank length above timber.

    Im going to stick with the aluminium nails as I cant see a technical reason against them.The job isnt coastal.
    Ill let you know in 50 years how they perform!

    Agree. I did my slate roof with copper. I was told that aluminium are more prone to break off heads due to the slate moving in strong winds and cutting through aluminium. Not sure how true it is.

    The AI is just googling quite basic websites on roofing .I keep going back to the use of aluminium on boats.
    AI told my neighbour that a buzzing light fitting was a wasps nest !

    . Ai needs to be applied with some common sense and not blatantly believe it. It pays to be sceptical. Does it make sense with what I already know? I will often check out the references that the information came from. One can be influenced by unconscious bias leading one to believe what one wants to hear. It is a useful tool saves time in searching for information.

    Do you mean the AI works out what one wants to hear, and obliges; or that one reads into AI's unbiased offering what we want?
