    What ho one and all,

Having managed to fish the CAT6 cable fro the loft (second floor?) to the g/f office space, I need a 3m length to connect form the wall socket to the router (when Openreach finally manage to install the fibre; at the moment, this year, next year sometime, never!!)

The cable is a factory made, 50m with male at each end. I wonder about cutting a 3m length off, and fitting a male plug to each cut end, then I will have the necessary extension. But.... how do I know which wiring standard the factory fitted plugs? Either T568A or T568B? Is there a way to determine? Or is it just a case of wire one way and if it does not work, try the other?

Although I hardly need an RJ45 network tester, by chance, my favorite Lidl has them on sale today so bought one for the mega sum of £4.99.

The electrons don't care which way round the orange and green cores are wired, so long as it's consistent at both ends of the cable. So bring both ends of the cable together and use a continuity tester to work out which colour goes on which side.

But, £5 should buy you a factory-made 3m extension cable with no need to fit plugs yourself, or buy the necessary crimping tool, or learn how to do it.

Good point about the off the shelf cable. May return the tester and buy one. Certainly don't need another tool.
  2.
If you have spare length, why not run the through -the-floor cable clipped all the way round the skirting to wherever the computer is going to be and plug it straight in? No need for extension cables and plug/sockets, all of which add impedance?

If you want it to emerge neatly from the plasterboard, you can have it come out from a flex outlet plate

Aha! https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/parkside-network-cable-tester/p10053783 - is at my other Lidl!

RJ45 is for Ethernet, 8 cores in 4 twisted pairs

RJ11 is for phone extensions, 4 cores all twisted round each other. Better chance of connecting this one by hand successfully!

    Iirc!
