Like I said elsewhere I prefer the stairs option if it is available

But in the new Heathrow T5 there isnt one! choose from a lift or an escalator or setting off an alarm or risking life and limb on the car park ramps.

How much is it costing in electricity to run there escalators? Many seem to be running 24/7 but not getting used????? or virtually not used.

Is it true that as many people go up as come down so net energy use should be only frictional losses only with good design management.

the net energy use argument is spurious.

there is an energy cost in making a down escalator run (with or without people) and an energy cost (allbeit greater) in running an up escalator, so no trade off.

It could possibly be that energy saving was not uppermost in the minds of the team designing that particular building. Presumably there must be staircases there for use in fires and emergencies, but hidden away somewhere. Given that they'd have to be sized to accommodate large numbers of panic-stricken punters, it does seem an odd decision not to have incorporated them into the public spaces. Maybe the designers thought that such a primitive, obsolete means of moving between floors would be an embarrassment in the new willy-waving showcase terminal of a thrusting, dynamic, modern country like Britain.
