High temperatures = high losses - small thermal stores cannot be as efficient as an unvented tank.
Smaller usable water volume - small stores are less space efficient than unvented cylinders.
Lower flow rate - small stores cannot match an unvented cylinder.

Just skimming the excellent document from the University of Stuttgart, certain points stick out:
1. The stores are ~3x the size of the ones I think are pointless.
The store with an external exchanger preserved stratification well during discharge, but was only capable of providing "hot" water 17C below the fully charged temperature, at a flow rate of 10l/min! Even more impressive is the fact that it was able to deliver 900l of warm water, when it was only 750l big!

I pretty much always use the term thermal store these days. They are all storing thermal energy and all giving it up in different ways for different usages.
After that I prefer buffer & accumulator
but there are many many more names and many are particular to certain countries. For example, just because we call it a boiler doesnt mean others dont call it a kettle! (cos thats what it does) literal translation.
