    I am currently comparing quotes for 4Kwp of pv and have quotes for Sharp NU-R245J5 panels and Sanyo HIT 250's.

    The latter are about 20% more expensive.
    They are nominally the same output but HIT panels are supposed to perform better in cloudy conditions and also in high temperatures leading to an estimated 10% extra annual output.

    Given that 4Kwp is the largest you can go I think there is still a reasonable return on the additional 20% providing the real life performance of these panels does give 10% extra.

    Does anyone have any real life experience of HIT panels that can confirm this?

    I've got the HIT 250s and they perform well but then I've got nothing to compare them with. This is where the advertising hype wins out, unless you have similar systems side by side how will you ever know? I don't know how true it is, but I heard, and it sounds plausible, that all silicon wafers are graded according to purity. It follows, so they say, that the purer the wafer the bettter it will be at it's job. I still don't know what grade Sanyo use in their hybrid modules or anyone else for that matter, they don't seen to say.

    I've got the HITs and I am pleased with them. As owlman says, without the side-by-side test I can't give you an objective answer.

    The point about the HITs is the amorphous bit.

    I think the big advantage of Sanyo is the fact you can get a larger kW system when space is restricted,
    as to the estimated 10% additional yield, I've fitted several different types of panels so far and my customer have been keeping me up to date with generation readings , it does seem the sanyo are producing a bit more , but i haven't studied the figure really and as it's only been 6 months since the first job , so this is more of a first impression view. ( my catchment of data is very small )
    I should be able to get 4kW on my roof using the 1.6/1 m standard panel, so when i get some free time to do it, I doubt I'll go for the HITs. For me Sanyo are about 60% more expensive than some of the cheapest non HIT panels.
    I'd be more interested, if I had to pay a premium,in a 'greener' produced panels
    I did hear of a suppier ( that didn't stock them ) that the Sanyo HIT patent was about to run out , anyone heard similar ?

    When we installed our system, the installer said Sanyo panels give more output under the sunniest conditions. But that the extra cost was only worth it if you were going to get that sun. So - in his view - yes for Cornwall, no for Norfolk. See Green Building Bible, Vol 2, page 16, dia 1.4 "UK average solar irradiation map", which shows Cornwall in the 10.5+ band and Norfolk in the 9.5 - 10.0 band.

    It's easy to compare systems - put your data into BDPV.fr, and compare actual performance with others nearby. Should be easy to find a HIT and non-HIT system fairly close together to cmpare, for example. .

    PVGIS will also fairly accurately esimate your annual performance with different panels and systems in different locations.

    10% additional output estimate is too high on a per kWp basis. We estimate it at around 5%. They're well worth it for smaller roofs, but not if you can already fit the same size system on the roof using cheaper panels.

    As I dont have a space issue I will go for the Sharps then.
