Two charities, The National Energy Foundation (www.nef.org.uk), and the Sustainable Energy Academy (www.sustainable-energyacademy.org.uk), have recently launched a campaign called ‘Old Home SuperHome’. The purpose is to focus attention on the energy performance of the UK’s 4.3 million solid (non-cavity) walled houses.

We are building an alliance of exemplar solid walled houses that have been transformed by their owners to typically reduce their energy use and carbon footprint by 60% or more. We are particularly looking for homes with insulated walls. We make the houses accessible to the public through arranging Open Days, so that others can learn how to save energy and be inspired. We support the Open Days through payment of a fee to the home owner, we publicise the Open Days and produce literature about the house for visitors to take away. A representative from NEF or SE-A can be present at the Open Days.

We already have 12 alliance members who have transformed their houses, and some have already successfully held Open Days.
