After spending a few hours in the loft space yesterday and now feeling very itchy from the rockwool I have a question. It is very obvious that the holes for cabling and piping from loft to room beneath are allowing through lots of druaghts. I was amazed how much dirt, smoke (previous owners were heavy smokers), mould has discoloured the rockwool above these holes.

What is the best way to feel these holes and stop the loss of heat and draughts from below into the loft space?

Easiest is decorators caulk. Then make good the quilted insulation ( and add some more?)

So not expanding foam (which I guess is not very friendly)?

In the future we might convert the loft space to living quarters so should I remove the rockwool now and completely upgrade? If so what would be the best soltuion phenolic (?) foam boards, hemp / wood batts or something else?

Leave the quilt and dont bother to add any more unless you are not doing the loft within 3 years then add another 150mm of quilt.
