Does anyone know anything about 'sustainable' treatments avaliable for timber cladding?
    - I have heard keywords such as 'boron based, non biocide and water soluble' mentioned, but am still very much in the dark on this subject.

Those won't work when exposed to water, as they're solube and will leach out. Better to choose a timber species that is sufficiently durable to require no treatment, for life.
