  1.
Not really a green issue but I need some advice. I need to cover some staining on a water damaged ceiling. It is painted with plain old matt emulsion but every time I paint over it the stain shows through. I have even tried sanding back to the plaster to no avail.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance, Mike

you could try a wash with watered PVA first

Have you tried Thompson Damp Seal stain blocking paint? Worked on the chimney breasts in my old house which suffered with brown stains from salts in the plaster.

You can get stain blocking paint (www.screwfix.com or such like)

Paint with aluminium primer - that will cover anything and is often used when a drastic change of colour needs to take place from very dark to very light. You'll need another primer on top of this but it should cover up the stain permanently. Also, I don't know if it's available in the UK, but Zinsser Bin is a shellac based primer/sealer that should work as it's used to seal knots on wood before painting.

    Hope this helps,

    Paul.
