Housing - New Build: Where do you get your building materials from

    Picking up on another post, in which it was said that local builders merchants only stock the very basics.

    I had a quick look at my 3 nearest merchants, TP and 2 small independents, and I must admit their stock is very basic and I know that previously when I asked for something a bit better than 'basic', it was a 'special order' and the price quoted was somewhat inflated, to the point where they are no longer competitive.

    So where do you get your stuff from, local supplier, internet, direct from manufacturers, abroad?

    In many cases an online company based on best prices, which then source their materials from local depots ...
    Several times things have been delivered from local stock, (TP, Jewsons, Wickes) for about 2/3 the "trade" prices quoted over the counter. (One example was when we had your "special order" experience with "enviroblock" at TP)
    Quantity is a factor of course, with bigger orders (only on a single extension build, so not huge) opening up better numbers but also often meaning delivery from further away in the UK.
    (We've kept miles and cost down by piggy-backing on other deliveries being made anyway ... rarely delayed by much.)
    Direct from abroad raises communication and transport delay issues, though things like Tescon tape proved to be quicker and cheaper on German ebay than anywhere else.

    Insulation generally local branch of national co. Screws, tools etc via local branch of mail-order co. Some ins and roofing stuff from a mail order supplier in SW - v impressed by their speed and relatively low carriage prices.

    For insulation use one of the big specialist National insulation suppliers, you'll get decent product technical advice and a fair deal.
    For all other stuff, special fixings, tapes, adhesives, membranes I usually stick to manufacturers if possible. If they won't deal direct then a simple request to their sales dept, for the address of a local supplier who has a good busy account with them often results in a decent price for you.
    For timber and sheet material again use big national suppliers, if the quantities are right they'll deal direct.
    I only use builders merchants for basic stuff, sand cement etc.. or if they are holding something specific that I want.
