    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/energy/11385867/Ofgem-criticised-for-patronising-money-saving-advice.html

Think they have got it in perspective. They should also say that housing is too expensive.
  1.
    100% "on the money"
The sheeple will not like it though, nay verily, they will resent such sage finincial advice.

Ofgem suggest ditching gym membership while the NHS is encouraging you to go to the gym by giving out free gym passes...

Got to love joined up government.

It's not bad advice. They could have added 'easy on the beer and fags' or 'cycle to work instead of driving' or 'try this tasty quinoa bake with kale pesto, instead of a takeaway curry'.

But it is patronising, irritating, and nothing to do with Ofgem's job. It reinforces the impression that Ofgem is a mouthpiece for the utilities. What I hear is "shut up and pay the frigging bill".
  2.
    OR; turn the thermostat back!
    or
pay the bill for the heat one knew one was consuming.
    simples.

We could make it even cheaper if we traded oil in Euros too.

Not so long ago LPG was the cheap alternative to oil. Maybe every house should have 4 different systems, and switch between as relative prices fluctuate (as they do).

No chance - 'earnings' on the world's deposits to settle oil-payment balances, held exclusively in dollars, is what keeps the US military budget afloat. Attempted projects so far, to set up direct settlement of oil debts in alternative currencies, bypassing the dollar, are deeply and fundamentally threatening to US hegemony.
Euros (incl 'Eurodollars') role is not as deposits but as the 'out there' currency that's devoted to Wall Street/City of London's third-world non-oil asset-stripping.

This flexibility is an advantage of electric heating. Sort of a tie breaker when the choice is between 90% efficient gas or 35% efficient electricity generation from gas, 7% transmission losses and a heatpump with a COP of 2.765.

The IEEE has already stated that they want domestic energy to be totally electric. That way any 'clean up' can be done more easily. Takes the problem out of the hands of the lazy/uneducated. And I don't mean that in a nasty way.

Just been around a house that is paying £160/month, split evenly between gas and electric.
Found the new gas boiler was on permanently, all the TRVs set to maximum, two old CRT TVs, one on. Two freezers, and kitchen extractor fan on to try and cool the place down.
Shall see what an hours tinkering does to the usage.

That's America's IEEE, right? UK has a huge investment in gas infrastructure and we'd need to invest a lot in electricity infrastructure if everyone switched to electric heating.

The Centre for Alternative Technology, in its Zero Carbon Britain plan (http://zerocarbonbritain.org/) suggests we should stay with gas, but make it from biological feedstock with a big input of (renewable) electrical energy. Think of all the problems that would solve...

No the UK, was in their Power Engineer comic a while back.

CAT worries me, I think I preferred it when it was partner swapping hippies, and I did not think much to it then.
