    What ho one and all,

Central Vac , where the hose joins the handle, there is a ???? that has broken and I would like to find a replacement.

But what is it called? And where would I start looking?

Hope someone will be able to provide a lead.

    Thanks and toodle pip

the equivalent on cabling would be called a "strain relief boot"

It looks like a manufacturer specific plastic hose union.
The hose wire core is right handed so the union may have a left handed thread. The hose/vac connector on my Numatic industrial vac is similar but the black bit on mine is solid. Can't you remove the grey hose and then do a repair job on the black bit, I realise there isn't much plastic to go at, but a 2 part epoxy on the break followed by some car body fibre-glass repair patches all round may then give you the added strength, just leaving a bit of the union end for flexibility.

I was thinking about these the other day. When we built, 5-6 years ago, they were the thing to have. (Being a philistine, I didn't.) But now with so many cordless vacs and robot vacs around are they still a thing people buy?

Thanks; I will investigate strain relief boot or collar.

Gaffer or duct tape would improve the situation, but is would probably not pass the SWMBO test. The nature of the mesh break is such (the photo only shows one side, there are other breaks) that I don't think epoxy will join anything for any strength. But wrapping with fibreglass is a thought.

As for whether it was a good idea to install; probably not as dragging around a 30 foot hose is a drag. But is does work without having to change batteries!

Another plus is that I bought a second extension tube and by using both, I can de-dust and de-cobweb the vaulted areas without scrambling up a ladder. We also installed the floor pan in the kitchen (just sweep to it and open the flap). As we have a hard wood floor, it may have been more sensible to add a few more around the house, particularly in the utility and bathrooms.
  2.
slide a piece of pipe over the hose connector, and glue the whole lot, so it makes second layer, and strengthens it all?

    Easier said then done.

The end that plugs into the wall sockets is has a kinda 'tongue' and the end inside the handle is larger diameter flange, heat welded to the hose, to prevent the hose coming out of the handle and allowing the hose to rotate.

In fact, now I think about it, I don't think I can replace the collar as it was put onto the hose before the parts on either end were heat welded to the hose!

    Bother comes to mind!
  3.
Cut the piece of pipe (to be used as a brace) axially. Peel it open and slide over the broken strainer piece. Glue, add cable ties to temp hold in place??

What does the bit that goes into the wall socket look like?

Man in this youtube vid appears to claim all central vac systems use same wall socket so any hose should fit..
