Our conservatory roof (rectangular approx 2.5m x 4m) has been damaged (by a firework rocket!). It is some form of multi-layer rigid transparent polycarbonate-type of material about 50mm thick and will need replacing. What is the best stuff to specify for thermal insulation? And I did read somewhere (but I lost the link) of an aerogel sandwich type roofing material - is this available in the UK? Anyone with any experience?

Might I suggest you replace the damaged panel with the same stuff?

    It's a conservatory.

If it's unheated, then it should be a 'barrier' to the outside elements, and therefore kinda 'green'.

If it's heated. . . . . then. . . . . .I suggest you take the whole roof off and put on a 'proper' roof with tiles/slates/felt and masses of insulation. . . . then stop calling it a conservatory and change the name to. . . . 'garden room'.

Appologies for the banal comment, but I haven't been on the forum in days, noticed you hadn't had any responses to your question and thought I might be able to add my 2 penneth worth. . . .for what it's worth. . . .

I guess transparent aerogel roofing panels aren't available in the UK then. :-) The roof apparently has to be replaced all or nothing, and I was hoping to improve its insulation at the same time. Solar gain is enormous when the sun comes out, and a traditional roof is not an option.

Would glass be an option? Probably better insulation and lower solar gain. Not sure though, maybe someone more experienced could give an opinion.
