We live in France and we have a new system for electric water heating called thermodynamique water heaters. From what I can understand it utilises heat from the house to help raise the temperature of the water and our plumber who is pushing this system says that it is 30% more efficient than a straightforward electric element and pays for itself within 4 years. I would appreciate any comments or experienced based knowledge on this type of system.

    Thanks for any replies

It may be an exhaust air heatpump - in that case, it could work as advertised. Otherwise the heat it takes from your house has to be supplied from somewhere as there is no free lunch. In general, all electric heaters are the same efficiency: 100% unless they are heatpumps.

Sounds interesting in a hot climate like southern France. Cools the air in your house and puts the heat into your hot water tank. Great in a hot summer but neutral/no saving in a cold winter if you have to heat your house more to compensate.

However, if you live in a sunny part of france I suspect it might be better to install solar hot water first with one of these thermodynamique water heaters as a back up.
