    We were planning a composting toilet system but the architect told us that the present septic tank is in good working order. Unfortunately we have had to back out of the composting loo scheme but want to put in gravel beds as a filter for the soakaway.
    Please can someone tell me the volume of bed needed per person and what size gravel. We live on sub moorland so can we use peat instead as a filter?

    sorry not an answer to your question ,
    but I once heard that if you filter urine through a metre of sand it will come out drinkable at the other end .
    never put it to the test though, so dont quote me !
