Can anyone advise me on self-build insurance, for a project which is 3 months from completion? Never having built a house before, I wasn't really aware that the project should be insured from the start, and now, as the shell is complete and items of increasing value are being put into and stored in the house, I want to get it safely insured. However, the only quote I could get was 800 GBP for 12 months from Selfbuild Zone......with no rebate for early cancellation of the policy. If anyone can advise, would appreciate it.

Unfortunately you are unlikely to get it much cheaper.

however it should cover your tools, public liability, and we converted the time left on ours with Self build zone into home and contents.

Also how have you managed to borrow money for it without a structural warranty or insurance ?

Who said any money was borrowed?

Are you acting as prime contractor and hiring trades or do you have a builder? If you are using a builder it's normal for him to arrange insurance but you should really have made that part of the contract.

If you are building it using sub contractors perhaps try asking DMS..

Thanks for these helpful comments - especially regarding converting the Selfbuild Zone cover to house & contents cover upon completion, since they'd said on the phone that they WOULDN'T do this. Will go back to them now and make this request again.

Price sounds about right to me (depends on the amounts insured).

If selfbuild zone won't convert to homes & contents then speak with Buildstore - I know they're insurance does convert (or at least did recently).

I might be a bit late for you, sorry. We insured throughTrade Direct Insurance, £860 for 18months and they do convert to buildings and contents once property is occupied. If you overrun you can also extend the cover pro-rata.
